A worn wheel bearing often starts as a low humming or droning noise that changes with road speed. Because tyre noise, brakes and driveshafts can produce similar sounds, the location is not always obvious from the driver seat.

What does a bad wheel bearing sound like?

The classic symptom is a rumble or hum that becomes louder as speed increases. The noise may change when the vehicle is gently loaded from side to side through a bend. However, this test is not absolute because road surface and tyre condition can influence the sound.

Other symptoms to watch for

Some failed bearings develop play at the wheel, although many modern cartridge bearings can be noisy before any obvious movement is present. In more advanced cases, there may be vibration, ABS-related faults or roughness when the wheel is rotated by hand.

What can be confused with bearing noise?

Cupped tyres, uneven tread wear, brake contact and worn CV joints can all mislead diagnosis. Rear tyre noise can also travel through the body and sound as though it is coming from the front. A workshop inspection can compare all four corners and check the suspension and braking components at the same time.

Why the hub matters

On some vehicles the bearing is pressed into the hub or knuckle; on others the complete hub assembly is replaced. Correct fitting is important because excessive force, incorrect torque or damage during installation can shorten bearing life.

Should you keep driving?

A noisy bearing should not be ignored. The rate of deterioration is difficult to predict, and a severely worn bearing can affect wheel stability and ABS operation. If the noise is getting rapidly worse, arrange an inspection rather than waiting for obvious play.

Still not sure what is causing the problem?

Symptoms can overlap between several faults. A proper inspection and diagnostic process is usually cheaper than replacing parts based on guesswork.
