A knock from the front or rear suspension can be surprisingly difficult to trace. Sound travels through the body and subframe, so the part that sounds loudest from the driver’s seat is not always the failed component. That is why suspension diagnosis should be based on inspection and movement rather than noise alone.
Drop links and anti-roll bar components
Worn drop links are a common source of light knocking over uneven roads. Anti-roll bar bushes can create similar symptoms, especially at lower speeds where small suspension movements are more noticeable.
Control-arm bushes and ball joints
Wishbone or control-arm bushes absorb movement and vibration while locating the wheel correctly. As they wear, the vehicle can develop knocks, vague steering and changes in braking stability. Ball joints can also create play and noise, and excessive wear can become a safety issue.
Top mounts and strut bearings
Front strut top mounts carry the suspension load and, on many vehicles, allow the strut to rotate during steering. Wear can cause knocking, creaking or a spring-like noise as the steering is turned.
Shock absorbers and struts
A leaking or internally worn shock absorber may cause poor body control, excessive bouncing or a dull knock. However, a visible oil film does not always mean the shock is completely failed, and a dry shock can still have internal wear.
Broken or weak springs
Coil springs can crack near the end where the break is difficult to see with the car on the ground. A broken spring may create noise, uneven ride height or contact with another component.
Why replacing the first worn-looking part is risky
Older vehicles often have several components that look tired. The important question is which part is actually moving or creating the symptom. Replacing one part because it looks old may not cure the knock if another joint or bush is the real source.
Can suspension wear affect tyres?
Yes. Worn joints and bushes can alter wheel position and contribute to uneven tyre wear. Wheel alignment also matters, so after certain suspension repairs it may be sensible to have geometry checked.

Still not sure what is causing the problem?
Symptoms can overlap between several faults. A proper inspection and diagnostic process is usually cheaper than replacing parts based on guesswork.
