A vehicle that starts badly from cold but improves as it warms up gives useful diagnostic clues. Temperature changes affect fuel mixture, sensor readings, compression sealing and ignition demand, so the fault may only be obvious during the first few minutes of operation.

Ignition problems

On petrol engines, worn spark plugs, weak ignition coils or moisture around the ignition system can cause misfires that are most noticeable when the engine is cold. As components warm up, the misfire may reduce enough to make the engine appear normal.

Air leaks and mixture faults

Unmetered air entering through split hoses, intake gaskets or crankcase ventilation faults can make the mixture too lean. A cold engine often needs more fuel enrichment, so an air leak can create rough idle, hesitation or stalling until the engine reaches temperature.

Fuel delivery

Low fuel pressure, leaking injectors or poor injector spray patterns can all affect starting. Diesel engines may also suffer from excessive injector return flow or glow-plug issues, while direct-injection petrol engines depend on both low-pressure and high-pressure fuel systems working correctly.

Sensors and engine temperature

The ECU uses coolant-temperature and intake-air information to calculate fuelling. If a temperature sensor reports an unrealistic value, cold-start enrichment may be wrong. Comparing live data with the actual ambient temperature before starting is a useful diagnostic step.

Mechanical condition

Low compression, valve leakage and timing faults can also cause poor cold running. Mechanical faults are particularly important to consider when ignition and fuel tests do not explain the symptoms.

If your car or van is difficult to start or runs rough from cold, our diagnostics service in Ruislip can investigate the cause. You can also book online.

Still not sure what is causing the problem?

Symptoms can overlap between several faults. A proper inspection and diagnostic process is usually cheaper than replacing parts based on guesswork.
