Fuel injectors have to deliver the correct amount of fuel at the correct time. When an injector starts to fail, the symptoms can look very similar to ignition, compression, air-flow or fuel-pressure problems. That is why replacing an injector purely because of a fault code is rarely a good diagnostic strategy.
Common injector symptoms
Typical signs include difficult starting, uneven idle, misfires, hesitation, excessive smoke, poor fuel economy and loss of power. On diesel engines, injector return flow can become excessive and make starting difficult because rail pressure takes too long to build. On petrol engines, a leaking injector can over-fuel one cylinder and foul the spark plug.
Why fault codes are only the starting point
An ECU may report a cylinder misfire or mixture fault without identifying the true mechanical cause. The problem could be the injector itself, damaged wiring, a poor connector, incorrect fuel pressure, low compression or an air leak. The test plan should be based on the actual symptoms and live data rather than one code in isolation.
Useful injector tests
Depending on the system, diagnosis can include cylinder balance data, electrical resistance, current-ramp testing, injector correction values, return-flow measurement, fuel-pressure checks and spark-plug inspection. On direct-injection petrol engines, fuel pressure on both the low-pressure and high-pressure sides may need to be checked.
Do not ignore fuel in the engine oil
A leaking injector can allow excess fuel into a cylinder and contaminate the engine oil. If the oil level rises or the oil smells strongly of fuel, the engine should be inspected promptly. Diluted oil loses viscosity and can reduce protection for bearings, timing components and turbochargers.
Repair the cause, not the symptom
Injector replacement can be expensive, particularly on common-rail diesel and direct-injection petrol systems. Testing first helps avoid unnecessary parts and can also reveal whether the underlying issue is fuel supply, wiring or engine condition.

Still not sure what is causing the problem?
Symptoms can overlap between several faults. A proper inspection and diagnostic process is usually cheaper than replacing parts based on guesswork.
