When the starter turns the engine at a normal speed but the engine does not fire, the battery and starter have completed only the first part of the job. Combustion still depends on fuel, ignition where applicable, compression, accurate timing and permission from the vehicle’s control systems.

Start with what is missing

A useful diagnostic approach is to establish whether the engine lacks fuel pressure, injector operation, spark, compression or a reliable engine-speed signal. This is much quicker than replacing the most common part found in an online search.

Crankshaft and camshaft signals

The ECU needs to know the position and speed of the engine. A failed sensor, wiring fault or mechanical timing issue can prevent injection or ignition. Some sensor faults store a clear code; others need live data or an oscilloscope to confirm.

Fuel delivery

Hearing a pump does not prove the correct pressure reaches the engine. Petrol direct-injection and common-rail diesel systems have low- and high-pressure sides, and both must operate within limits. Contaminated fuel, air entering a diesel supply or excessive injector leak-off can also cause a no-start.

Immobiliser and voltage

An immobiliser warning, unrecognised key or communication fault may allow cranking while preventing the engine from running. Low battery voltage can create a similar puzzle: the starter turns, but control-module voltage falls far enough to disrupt operation.

Mechanical condition

If timing has moved or compression is low, electronic testing alone will not solve the problem. Compression, cylinder leakage and physical timing checks may be required.

Note what happened before the failure: recent repair work, a warning light, gradual hard starting, running out of fuel or a sudden cut-out. That history often shortens the diagnosis. For a non-starting vehicle, contact Capital Garage about car diagnostics in Ruislip.

Still not sure what is causing the problem?

Symptoms can overlap between several faults. A proper inspection and diagnostic process is usually cheaper than replacing parts based on guesswork.
