An exhaust noise changes with engine speed, load, temperature and vehicle movement. Describing when it occurs is often more helpful than describing it as simply loud.
A sharp blowing or ticking sound
Leaks close to the engine can sound like a tick that speeds up with the engine. Manifold joints, flexi sections, flanges and cracked pipework are common areas to inspect. Soot marks sometimes reveal the path, but a small leak may open only when hot.
Metallic rattles
A loose heat shield can buzz at one narrow engine speed. Broken internal material in a silencer or catalytic converter can produce a deeper rattle. Exhaust contact against a subframe or body may occur because a rubber mounting has stretched.
Why engine mounts matter
Excessive engine movement can pull the exhaust out of position or make it strike nearby components. Repairing only the exhaust contact may not last if the mount remains weak.
Fumes are the priority
A leak can allow fumes towards the cabin, particularly when stationary. Headache, dizziness or an exhaust smell inside the car should never be ignored. Ventilate the vehicle, stop using it and arrange inspection.
Capital Garage provides exhaust inspection and repair in Ruislip, including leak tracing, mountings, damaged sections and related diagnosis.
Still not sure what is causing the problem?
Symptoms can overlap between several faults. A proper inspection and diagnostic process is usually cheaper than replacing parts based on guesswork.
