Steering faults affect both safety and confidence in the car. If the steering has become heavy, vague, noisy or develops free play, Capital Garage can inspect the system and identify whether the problem is mechanical, hydraulic or electronically assisted.
Steering problems we diagnose
- Knocking or play through the steering wheel
- Heavy or inconsistent steering assistance
- Noise while turning
- Fluid leaks on hydraulic systems
- Worn track rods, joints and linkages
- Steering-rack faults
- Power-steering pump or electric-assist problems
- Steering warning lights and related fault codes
Mechanical and electronic systems
Modern steering systems vary significantly. Some use conventional hydraulic assistance, some electric pumps and others fully electric racks. We inspect the mechanical condition and use diagnostic testing where the vehicle relies on electronic control.
Replacing the right component
A steering knock can come from suspension, column joints, track rods or the rack itself, so the source needs to be located before expensive parts are ordered. Where a rack, pump or joint does need replacement, we explain the repair and any follow-up alignment requirement.
Steering repair FAQs
Can you diagnose electric power-steering faults?
Yes. Electronic steering systems can store fault data and may need electrical checks alongside a mechanical inspection.
Will I need wheel alignment afterwards?
Some steering and suspension repairs can disturb alignment. Where appropriate we will advise you to have geometry checked after the repair.
Need help with this repair?
Send us your registration and a short description of the problem. We will confirm the next suitable booking and any details we need before the vehicle arrives.
